The Recruiting Process

- Decide on your goals and manage your expectations. That is the #1 step: To decide where do I want to go and why? Many people say get a list of 100 colleges and send them DVDs...we think that's crazy. You should apply where you want to go...not who wants to take you. Will I be happy at this school versus that school...is the question! Do I know my career choice yet? Do I want to travel or stay around home? Do I want an urban or city setting...or do I want to be more in the country or greener setting? Those are the MOST important questions because they set the groundwork for what sport you're highlighting and for what position you do best. Doesn't it make sense that we should establish that first?
- Call your coaches and athletic director. Let them know that you're going to put together a highlight video to show coaches and recruiters so that you can work to get a scholarship, a grant or more financial aid. It's not uncommon that you may feel strange doing so, especially if you haven't led the league in scoring, blocks, tackles, time or hits; or that the coach may look at you "sideways"(My coaches laughed at me--HA!)
I'm not going to tell you that anyone can get a scholarship...because that's not true, but there's a tremendous misconception out there as to how "good" you need to be. There are 3 divisions, and then there are good & great schools within each one...most offering some sorts of aid, to some people...it could be you...it SHOULD be you
